Oberlin Opera Theater, directed by Jonathon Field, in collaboration with the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra conducted by Christopher Larkin, presents Jules Massenet's Cendrillon (1895), an opera based on Charles Perrault's 1698 telling of the Cinderella fairy tale.
Staging two major productions each year, Oberlin Opera Theater is known for artistic excellence and innovation. Whether presenting a bold, new interpretation of a classic, the world premiere of a contemporary work, or a historically informed version of a little-known baroque gem, Oberlin Opera Theater often challenges operatic norms. Its productions have received the highest critical acclaim from local and national publications, earning positive reviews in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Plain Dealer.
A rags-to-riches fairy tale that has enchanted audiences for centuries takes center stage this spring in Oberlin Opera Theater’s production of Jules Massenet’s Cendrillon (Cinderella). All of the familiar storybook characters—evil stepmother, charming prince, fairy godmother, and maid-turned-princess—will come to life in the love duets, coloratura flourishes, and grand waltzes of Massenet’s ravishing score, performed by Oberlin’s talented young musicians. Cendrillon will be sung in French with English supertitles. The production opens on Wednesday, March 8, at 8 p.m. in Oberlin’s Hall Auditorium, with additional performances on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
"Opera is not only alive and well at Oberlin, it's also adventurous."
- Donald Rosenberg, Plain Dealer
