Since its inception in 1878, Oberlin’s Artist Recital Series at historic Finney Chapel has presented more than 1,000 of the world’s most acclaimed and accomplished musicians, conductors, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and composers. On February 17 and 19, the ARS presents master classes with Marilyn Horne!
Marilyn Horne is an American mezzo-soprano vocalist from Long Beach, California. She attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles where she studied with William Vennard. At twenty years old, Marilyn made her operatic debut as Hata in Smetana’s The Bartered Bride for the Los Angeles Guild Opera. Igor Stravinsky recognized her singing ability, and her operatic career began when he invited her to perform in the 1956 Vienna festival. By the mid-1960s, Horne was an international opera star.
Her career, lasting over four decades, has earned her the legacy as one of America’s greatest opera singers. Horne has earned Grammy Awards for her recordings of Handel’s Semele (Deutsche Grammaphon),Presenting Marilyn Horne, In Concert at the Met with Leontyne Price and Marilyn Horne, and Carmen (conducted by Leonard Bernstein). Horne is known for her dramatic range, singing everything from Gioachino Rossini to William Bolcom, "Danny Boy" to George Handel's Rinaldo. She is credited in Italy as being the interpreter of Gioachino Rossini and is recognized worldwide for her bel canto and versatile style of singing.
Horne continues to be one of America’s most beloved artists. She was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in October 2009 and the next month was the recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Opera Honors. President Clinton named her a Kennedy Center Honoree in 1995. In 1992, she received the National Medal of the Arts from President Bush and the Endowment for the Arts. Recent and very special milestones and achievements for Horne include being a recipient of the prestigious Opera News Award, the highest honor given within the opera industry.
Actively dedicated to excellence in vocal art, Horne has ongoing commitments for private teaching and master classes throughout the world. In addition to her annual residency at Oberlin, where she is a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Singing, she is on the faculty at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California.
